The purpose of this blog is to
review the way disability functions in a variety of texts and movies whose
primary audience is children. As I read different works, I will identify the
way disabilities are portrayed, and evaluate the effectiveness. My goal is to
cover books on all disabilities, not only physical, but mental as well. I want
to note that I include things like depression, bipolar disorder, and cancer in the definition
of disabilities. I have chosen to do this because like any other disability, I
believe these are out of one’s control. For the purposes of this blog, I have defined a disability as something that is not only out of one's control, but makes them different. I will challenge the idea of being different by showing that different is not so bad at all.
My reviews will not provide
spoilers, simply an overview of the plot with the primary focus being on the
disability and the way it is portrayed. My intent is to aid teachers and
parents in the selection of books for their students and children that will enrich
their minds through becoming well-rounded readers and individuals. Moreover, I include books in this blog that show readers there are much more to people than what meets the eye. I believe learning about different disabilities is a great way for children and teens to learn this about their peers.
